It's been so fun to watch the beginnings of Madeline's imagination, and how it's shaped by her life. For example, anything that she plays with that is small is the "baby one" and anything that is bigger than the "baby one" is the "mama one". If something is really, really big it's the "daddy one". This naming scheme goes for pretty much anything: rocks, stuffed animals, baby dolls, cars, rubber bands, etc.
A few months ago we were hanging out as a family on a Saturday afternoon, shortly after I'd woken up from my Saturday sleep. Scott and I were talking, and Madeline was standing next to me playing with three rubber duckies. A daddy one, a mama one, and a baby one. I started to pay attention to what she was saying as she played, and this is what I heard:
Baby go night night. Baby crying. Mommy no get you. Mommy working (which she pronounces yerking). Baby crying. Daddy get you. Mommy come home. Mommy tired. Mommy go night night. Baby crying. Mommy no get you. Mommy night night.
Well, that was enough to break my heart. At least she knows our weekend routine, I guess.
And speaking of mommy ones and baby ones, Madeline has taken to asking me everyday, "Baby come Nan's (Madeline's) house? Nan wants baby at Nan's house."
I agree.
