Summer Adventures

Madeline was getting sick of her toys a few weeks ago. While talking to my sister, Shelley, she gave me the idea of finding things around the house for her to play with. It's amazing - she likes household items much more than her toys. Her favorite things to play with are toothbrushes, spatulas, and remote controls.

Scott and I had our third wedding anniversary on July 28th. We celebrated it a few days earlier when we could get a babysitter for Madeline. This was only the second date we'd been on since she was born. I always thought it was silly when new parents wouldn't leave their child to go out with their spouses, but now I understand that it's just easier to stay at home. Our friends Scott and Janae were gracious enough to watch Madeline for the evening. Scott and I went to see the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight. We both loved it. The new batmobile was awesome! The guns were a little to large and loud for my tastes, but otherwise it was really fun. We were planning on going out to eat at my favorite restaurant, Benihanna, but the movie ran longer than we had expected. We've been trying to go to that restaurant since we moved here, but various things keep happening everytime we plan to go. So, instead we went to Chili's because it was on our way home. It was nice to get away together, but I have to admit that I thought about Madeline pretty much the whole night. Here is a picture of the beautiful roses Scott brought me that day, without any suggestion on my part! I'm lucky to be married to such a wonderful man.

A couple of weeks ago Madeline and I flew to Utah to visit our family. My parents moved to Logan at the end of July and we were able to see their beautiful new home. This is a picture of Madeline taking a bath in their jacuzzi.

We went to the Roper family reunion in Altamont, UT while we were there. It was so fun to spend time with our extended family that we don't get to see often. Over the course of our time in Utah, Madeline met a lot of people for the first time, including her Aunt Shelley, Uncle Brad, and great grandparents. She was pretty overwhelmed with all of the action and was more tired and crabby than usual. We did a lot of driving while we were in Utah and Madeline started to think it was really lame to sit in her carseat for hours. This is a picture of me letting her suck on a jolly rancher to keep her happy. She doesn't have any teeth to rot out yet.

While we were gone Madeline learned how to sit on her own, and she became much more mobile. She started to get up on her hands and knees, but couldn't figure out how to move forward.

Now, 10 days later, she's moving around even more. Sometimes I forget to watch her and find her discovering new places. Yesterday morning I found her playing in the track of our sliding glass door. Her feet and her knees were black.

Yesterday I started feeding her vegetables. We started with avocados. In the morning she thought it was the nastiest thing I could have put in her mouth. There was some crying and a little gagging. I guess I wouldn't eat avocados for breakfast either. For dinner I fed them to her cold and she ate much better.
